We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Metropolitan, like the other places we stayed in Israel, we didn't spend much time in the actual hotel but it was well appointed, the staff was friendly and the breakfast was nice. The hotel is a skip and hop away from the Mediterranean Sea so that was a plus. Tel Aviv is a great city and Hotel Metropolitan was a nice hotel from which to explore it.

It's some 10 years since we last stayed at the Metropolitan, and what was a smart hotel then, hasn't aged too gracefully. Put simply, it's clear that there's been little investment or refurbishment over the years - not that you should be put off by this. For one thing, it's surprisingly good value for money for a large city-centre hotel, and it's less expensive than those directly on the sea front. The Metropolitan is only 100 metres or so from the beach, and is in an excellent location. Old Jaffa, trendy Rothschild Boulevard, Dizengoff Square, Rabin Square, the Mann Auditorium - these are all about a 20 minute walk away.

Two of the higher floors of the hotel were closed for refurbishment, so this might be an optimistic sign for further renovations. It was too early in the season for the pool area to be open. As things stand, our bedroom was somewhat dated, with dark mahogany furniture that was fashionable in the '90s, and the room looked rather jaded. However, it was clean, there was ample storage, and it was a reasonable size compared with many city centre rooms. There were the usual standard items, including tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge. The bathroom was tiny, toiletries somewhat scant, but it was again clean. The bedrooms don't have balconies.

Downstairs, there's a small lobby lounge, bar and gift shop. We had a traditional Friday evening (Shabbat) meal in the functional, yet pleasant, dining room. The buffet-style food was excellent, and good value for money. The dining room was efficiently managed by an excellent maitre d' and restaurant manager, supported by attentive staff. Breakfast, too, was very good indeed. The hotel staff are all very friendly and helpful.

Tel Aviv is a terrific and exciting city, so it isn't the sort of place where you would want to spend much time in your hotel. It's a city for getting out and about, and the beach is fantastic. Because of this, the Metropolitan is ideal for a short city break. In the UK, it would be a good 3-star hotel. But of course, if it's 5-star luxury you're after, then there are plenty of options in 'the city that never sleeps'. For a long weekend, we'd certainly stay there again.
